Age of Consent

From Conde Nast's Creative Entertaining 1972Agony Aunt Nora answers your questions about life, love and how to make a great martini (questions and answers sourced from The Bride's Guide (1972).

Q: Mine is a very silly worry but it keeps nagging at me. When I first met my fiance, I told him that I am five years younger than I am, as he is 28 and I am 33. I look much younger than my age and wonder if there is any way of keeping the truth from him.

A: It would be extremely difficult and a big mistake to continue with this very unimportant deception. Your date of birth will be on all kinds of legal documents, including your passport and birth certificate. Evening though you look younger than your age, think of the embarrassing situations that could arise when he meets your family, or old school friends, It's simply not worth it. There is no need to make a big thing out of telling him, but stop worrying; five years is a very short part of a lifetime.

BONUS Question:

Dear Nora,
My friends are drinking us out of house and home. While my husband and I like company, we have to get to sleep sometime. How can I get my guests to sober up and leave while still appearing to be the perfect hostess?

Answer: Here, have a drink and after that try this cocktail recipe

Pride of Oporto*
2 lemons
small glass of orange Curacao
1 bottle of tawny port
1 syphon soda water
Squeeze juice of 1 lemon into bowl, add port and Curacao. Use thin slivers of lemon to decorate bowl. Leave for 20 mins., then fill glasses two-thirds full, topping up each glass with soda water. This drink, on the sweet side is deceptively strong. Use less soda at the start of the party, more in subsequent drinks.
