Who Listens To The Radio?

Tune in. Click for a larger imageIn the era that gives us portable music the size of a postage stamp, it seems incredible to believe that 'portable' meant the size of a large make-up case and possibly weigh about four to five kilograms.

That was the reality in 1940.

Take a look at the copy writing in the accompanying illustration:

"Dick's wife will be pleased with this set."

It's a very affirmative statement complete with underscore.

Why wouldn't Dick's wife be pleased? Is she a very fussy woman?

More like her husband is in the service and they're keeping her company while Dick is at war.

Look closer at the two figures, they're dressed fairly well, but they're moving at speed. Perhaps curfew is looming perhaps something more ominous.

Like all good Brits during the war, they're fully prepared and not just for a night listening to the wireless.

Spot the clue?

They're also ready for the gas attack with Mrs Dick's friends each carrying gasmasks over their right shoulder.
